Coffee enthusiasts often ask us . . .
What is the best way to store my coffee -- to keep it fresh and delicious?

How To Store Coffee
An airtight container stored in a cool, dry, dark place is the best environment for your coffee. The enemies of roasted coffee are: Moisture, Air, Light, and Heat. Store your coffee away from "the enemy," and it will stay fresher longer.

Freezing Coffee - Not Good!
Some people store their coffee in the freezer to keep their coffee fresh. Here are two important reasons to keep your coffee out of the freezer:

  • Coffee is porous and absorbent. As a result, coffee will absorb other flavors, e.g., the flavor of seafood stored in your freezer. Coffee can also absorb the moisture that your freezer produces. This moisture will, in turn, deteriorate the coffee and may even make it taste like, well... a freezer.
  • Freezing destroys coffee's flavor. When coffee is roasted, the beans release natural oils and essences which give the coffee its distinct flavor. Freezing breaks down these natural oils and, thus, destroys flavor.

When To Refrigerate Coffee
Never. The fridge is one of the worst places to store coffee, again, because coffee will absorb other food flavors and destructive moisture.

A quick summary for serving the best coffee

  • Buy whole beans directly from a coffee roaster.
  • Look for valve-sealed bags, not vacuum-sealed.
  • Store your coffee beans in a sealed container in a cool, dry, dark place.
  • Grind your beans just before brewing.
  • Enjoy!
